Safety of an IPL Photofacial While Breastfeeding

Is it safe to have an IPL Photofacial treatment while breastfeeding? YES, but with a few exceptions.

During pregnancy the increase in hormone production can create a form of hyperpigmentation that can persist beyond birth and continue during breastfeeding and beyond.  Assessing if the pigment is pregnancy induced melasma or sun damage is important as an IPL Photofacial is not recommended for melasma.

Also, the use of bleaching creams containing hydroquinone or Retin-A can be beneficial when you are done breastfeeding…  you want to make sure you avoid these products while breastfeeding for the safety of your baby.

The best treatment for dark spots while breastfeeding is an IPL Photofacial. While we recommend applying a topical numbing cream prior to the treatment, we suggest that mothers who are breastfeeding forego the topical numbing cream to avoid absorbing the lidocaine that could cross over in the breast milk to your baby. Instead, we offer a chiller system that blows cold air onto your face to provide comfort during the treatment.
